July 10th, 2016 was a day that I felt and overwhelming feeling of pride in my life. As a new and first time father (10 months ago on September 2nd), I am experiencing things that are literally changing my views not only on life but on my business.
First, let’s back up a bit. My son was born on September 2nd, 2016. Healthy, happy and so darn cute. At birth he had achieved one thing that he will never take away. He stole my heart. To think that one little boy could give you so much joy and appreciation for the things in life that you otherwise had either taken for granted or never even noticed is incredible.
As many of you know who have been reading my posts for several years or have worked with me, I take a great amount of pride in my business and the work that I do, which is not surprising for many entrepreneurs. This week I felt a different kind of pride. It was a pride of fatherhood. It’s this week we decided to start work on my son’s first and new room. To give him a big boy room with a really cool plane theme (it helps that I love airplanes as well). This included painting as the first step. Well yesterday I started to apply the paint and things were different. I had painted many times in our house this year and even in my life, but this was very unique. I wasn’t just painting to change the room a different color. I was painting to give my son a place he will love. A place he will build memories, play, learn, have happy times, but every time he goes into that room whether he realizes it or not every brush stroke or rolling of paint was applied by he father who was thinking about him during the whole process. If I am away for work (which happens from time to time) I will know he is sleeping in a room that I had a wonderful part in making for him). I hope this doesn’t sound to mushy or sappy, but it’s something I felt and needed to share, so why not in my blog?
So how does this all impact my view on business?
We spend so much time doing things that don’t give us great sense of value and purpose. Most of the time it’s tied to money. We do it because the pay is good, but is it really? You can do things in your business that give you the deep down feel good currency and put a smile on your face each day without hurting your bank account. Don’t get caught up in the mundane routine over and over. Do something this week and every week that YOU want to do. Something that YOU will think about and smile. Heck the reason we are in business for ourselves is because we love what we do right?
What is it you will do to put a smile on your face?
