The Tooth Fairy & Your Business

October 22, 2015

Have you had a visit from the Tooth Fairy lately?  Probably not and for obvious reasons.

However, for my 8 year old last night, that was the case.  She had a tooth pulled yesterday at the dentist and last evening the tooth fairy came and brought her $10 (yes, $10 per tooth…don’t get me started on how that inflation happened).

This morning while I’m in the kitchen making her breakfast before school she started telling me about this, proceeding to explain some clear self perceived facts about said “tooth fairy”; I’ll list them below in case you didn’t know.

  • If you’re a boy, your tooth fairy is a boy as well. If a girl, she is a girl.
  • Each kid in the house has their own tooth fairy.
  • When you’re done losing teeth, your tooth fairy retires.
  • To find out their color, you put your tooth in a glass of water so when the Tooth Fairy has to reach in to get it, the water will turn the color that he/she is.

The reason I’m telling you this is because of the way it was told to me.  She is 8 and she whole heartily believes this.  The tooth fairy is real and the experience is as real as anything else in the world to her.  So this got me thinking two things as I sat down with my coffee.

The first is, what happened to our innocence? At some point in our lives we have given up the idealistic view of the world where the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus ran freely to and from our house. Now we are faced with chores, sleepless nights and  taxes.  What if we for a day truly went back to that simplistic world?  How would we face our daily challenges?

The second is more important when it comes to your business.  What can I do today, tomorrow and this month to provide an experience for my clients that provide such excitement and anticipation similar to that of the arrival of the Tooth Fairy.  Think about your part, how can you build an experience around receiving your product or service that makes it special?  What you do is an important part of others lives (maybe not everyone in the world, but some) so how can you make that even more magical?

How will you deliver their Tooth Fairy?
